Several ESAD members and supporters will be heading to Albany for two advocacy related trips to remind our legislators and governmental officials that Deaf New Yorkers have many issues with services and programs that need to be provided for the Deaf community.
On Monday, January 26th, ESAD’s community partner, Center for Disability Rights in Rochester will be chartering a bus for the annual NYS Legislator’s Disability Awareness Day at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. ESAD’s goal will be to provide information and awareness to legislators on several issues including certification for educational interpreters in the classroom (K-12) and community based interpreters, hearing aid insurance coverage, Deaf truck driver licensing, Deaf-blind services and ASL in schools.
If you are interested in meeting ESAD in Albany, please contact either Steve Lovi at SLovi19@aol.com or Dean DeRusso at dderusso@ferretrex.com to either join us from Rochester (space permitting) or to arrange for a meeting location in Albany at the Empire State Plaza.
On Friday, Janaury 30th, we will be taking our second trip, again with the support of ESAD’s community partner, Center for Disability Rights to Albany to meet with the newly established Interagency Council for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing that is administered by the NYS CQCAPD (Commission on Quality of Care and Persons with Disabilities). This will be the first meeting for the Council and many ESAD members and supporters will be attending to show our support and communicate several concerns with the council. Again, ESAD’s goal will be to provide information and awareness on several issues to Council members including certification for educational interpreters in the classroom (K-12) and community based interpreters, hearing aid insurance coverage, Deaf truck driver licensing, Deaf-blind services and ASL in schools.
